<\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>abea Zimmermann is a musician of captivating versatility. As a soloist and chamber musician, she performs <\/span><\/span>worldwide, teache<\/span><\/span>s, nurtures talent and fosters collaboration. She is president o<\/span><\/span>f<\/span><\/span><\/span> several foundations and <\/span><\/span>consistently initiates ad commissions new works. While her instrument, the viola, remains central to her<\/span><\/span> activities<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> Zimmermann’s responsibilities have<\/span><\/span><\/span> grown more di<\/span><\/span>verse<\/span><\/span> over the years<\/span><\/span>, allowing her to<\/span><\/span> contribute her entire personality: with her extensive concert experience, her interest in promoting young <\/span><\/span>talent, and her social responsibility. “For me, a long<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>standing wish is now being fulfilled: that I can help <\/span><\/span>sha<\/span><\/span>pe content,” she summarizes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Zimmermann owes her fame to the viola. At eleven years old, Zimmermann made her debut on the stage of <\/span><\/span>the Berlin Philharmonie. Competition successes in Geneva, Paris, and Budapest between 1982 and 1984<\/span><\/span> catapulted her to promin<\/span><\/span>ence. Shortly after, she made a distinctive move by accepting a position at the <\/span><\/span>University of Music Saarland, where at 21, she became the youngest professor in Germany. Her <\/span><\/span>commitment to teaching remains strong; after tenures in Frankfurt and Berlin, she r<\/span><\/span>eturned to the Frankfurt<\/span><\/span> University of Music and Performing Arts in the summer of 2023. She also shares her passion for music at the<\/span><\/span> Kronberg Academy and in a few masterclasses. Zimmermann’s emphasis<\/span><\/span> on contemporary music<\/span><\/span> was perhaps spurred by the limited traditional solo <\/span><\/span>repertoire for the viola. In 1994, she premiered a solo sonata dedicated to her by Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti<\/span><\/span>. Co<\/span><\/span>mposers<\/span><\/span> such as Heinz Holliger, Wolfgang Rihm,<\/span><\/span><\/span> and Georges Lentz wr<\/span><\/span>ote<\/span><\/span> pieces for her.<\/span><\/span> In r<\/span><\/span>ecent times<\/span><\/span> she <\/span><\/span>presented<\/span><\/span> solo concert<\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span><\/span> by Enno Poppe and Michael Jarrell<\/span><\/span><\/span> in acclaimed CD recordings. She passionately<\/span><\/span> advocates for stylistic diversity, arguing that engaging with contemporary music also influe<\/span><\/span>nces <\/span><\/span>interpretations of the classical repertoire: “It makes one interpret these piec<\/span><\/span>es much more consciously.” <\/span><\/span><\/p>

<\/span><\/span>Quality over quantity<\/span><\/span> \u2014<\/span><\/span><\/span> adhering to this principle, Zimmermann has for some time now limited her annual <\/span><\/span>performances to around 50. Alongside her<\/span><\/span><\/span> solo presentations, she places high importance on chamber<\/span><\/span> music, collaborating with artists like J\u00f6rg Widmann, Javier Perianes, the Belcea Quartet, and long<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>time <\/span><\/span>colleagues from the Arcanto Quartet, which existed until 2016. For Zimmermann, the a<\/span><\/span>ttraction<\/span><\/span><\/span> of small <\/span><\/span>ensembles lies not just in their clarity but in their egalitarian nature<\/span><\/span> \u2014<\/span><\/span><\/span> flat hierarchies that model societal <\/span><\/span>interactions. She extends this approach to orchestral projects, leading symphonic pieces from her central <\/span><\/span>voice<\/span><\/span>, emphasizing communica<\/span><\/span>tion and<\/span><\/span> listening<\/span><\/span>. She has collaborated in this manner with Ensemble<\/span><\/span> Resonanz, the B<\/span><\/span>avarian Radio<\/span><\/span> Symphony Orchestra, and the National Youth Orchestra of Germany. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

<\/span><\/span>Zimmermann remains a sought<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>after partner for many orchestras and festivals. She has held r<\/span><\/span>esidencies<\/span><\/span> with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony <\/span><\/span>Orchestra, to name a few. The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra named her Artistic Partner in 2022, and she’s <\/span><\/span>set to curate several concerts for the Schw<\/span><\/span>etzingen<\/span><\/span> SWR<\/span><\/span> Festival in 2024. Her expertise is also recognized<\/span><\/span> in <\/span><\/span>other fields<\/span><\/span>: she<\/span><\/span> was president of<\/span><\/span> the Beethoven<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>Haus Bonn for seven years and is currently the president <\/span><\/span>of the Swiss Hindemith Foundation. This position reflects Zimmermann’s versatility;<\/span><\/span><\/span> she has always revered <\/span><\/span>Hindemith, with the recording of his complete works for viola in 2013 being a long<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>held desire. Now, as <\/span><\/span>foundation president, she has even more opportunities to elevate the composer’s profile among musici<\/span><\/span>ans, <\/span><\/span>promoters, and audience<\/span><\/span>s. In October 2023, she was awarded honorary membership, the highest honour of the German Music Council, in tribute to her passionate and dedicated commitment to musical life.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

<\/span><\/span>Tabea Zimmermann will be seen more often at such crossroads between music and society.<\/span><\/span><\/span> Since July 2023,<\/span><\/span> she<\/span><\/span><\/span> chair<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> the board of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting<\/span><\/span> contemporary music<\/span><\/span><\/span> through<\/span><\/span> an award she herself won<\/span><\/span> in 2020. Zimmermann firmly believes that <\/span><\/span>musicians’ roles in society need<\/span><\/span> strengthening<\/span><\/span>, especially after the challenges of the pandemic. Conversely, <\/span><\/span>she notes, “We all need to<\/span><\/span> re<\/span><\/span>consider what we<\/span><\/span> hope to<\/span><\/span> achieve<\/span><\/span> through<\/span><\/span> music.” She<\/span><\/span><\/span> has also<\/span><\/span> established <\/span><\/span>her<\/span><\/span><\/span> own foundation, named after her late first husband, David Shallon. The David Shallon Foundation<\/span><\/span> supports unique,<\/span><\/span> intercultural music projects<\/span><\/span> such as the “<\/span><\/span>Lebensmelodien<\/span><\/span>” of clarinetist Nur Ben Shalom, <\/span><\/span>which revives Jewish music from the Holocaust era.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

<\/span><\/span>F<\/span><\/span>or Zimmermann, it’s all about making an impact, not just in music but beyond. For her extensive <\/span><\/span>contributions, she’s been honored with numerous musical awards and societal recognitions, including the<\/span><\/span> Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
