Biography:
Lithuanian-born (1974) violist Ula Ulijona began her studies in her own city, Vilnius, later graduating as solo violist at the Berlin Musikhochschule “Hanns Eisler” with Tabea Zimmermann and at the “Basel Academy of Music” with Hatto Bayerle.
Since 1997 she has been First Solo Viola of the Kremerata Baltica – the prestigious chamber orchestra founded and led by violinist Gidon Kremer – with which she has played all over the World.
She is First Viola of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, the Italian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, since 2010.
Ula Ulijona has been awarded in many international contests, one of the most important being the “William Primrose” in Chicago. In Munich (Germany) she won the “Die tz-Rose für die Woche” prize, with the “Sonata for viola and piano” op. 147 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
She has performed as a soloist with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow Soloists, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Winterthur Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra , the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Konzerthaus Sinfonie Orchester, in famous venues and halls like the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Boston Symphony Hall and the Tokyo Suntory Concert Hall.
Ula is giving regularly masterclasses for orchestral excerpts and viola repertuar at Music Institute by Vittorio Baravalle in Fossano. State Conervatory of Music by Arrigo Pedrollo in Vicenza, Conservatory of Music by Luca Marenzio in Brescia, Conservatory of Music by Giuseppe Nicolini in Piacenza and at Conservatory of Music by Giuseppe Verdi in Turin, Italy.
Starting from 2021 Ula is viola professor at State Conservatory of Music by G. F. Ghedini in Cuneo, Italy.
She is giving masterclasses also in many other Italian cities and abroad.
